On behalf of Team Thailand, we would like to seek clarification regarding Rule 2.3.B.3 Robot Safety Design, which states: “Mechanical Safety: No sharp edges, pinch points, or other hazards. Actuators must be appropriate for the robot’s size and function.”
Our project involves balloon popping, which utilizes a needle to pop the balloons. The needle is securely attached to a servo motor and locked in place using glue and tape to prevent it from detaching from the servo.
Regarding the setup for the performance, this mechanism will be placed behind the balloon rack. During the performance, no human operators will touch the needle. However, during the initial system setup, team members must check and verify the position of the needle before the performance begins.
Therefore, we would like to clarify whether the use of this needle is permitted for the performance. The needle is approximately 4 cm in length, and during transit, it will be stored safely in a designated needle case.
Thank you for submitting your question and for expressing your concern regarding safety.
Following the committee’s discussion, here is our preliminary feedback:
Use of Small Needle — The committee does not prohibit its use; however, we recommend improving the design to make it safer, such as:
Adding a protective cover or a retractable mechanism (similar to a pen) that only exposes the needle when needed, like a lancet pen
Limiting the exposed tip length to the minimum necessary
Ensuring a secure locking mechanism is in place
Balloon Popping Sound — Some committee members raised concerns that the sound may startle spectators and competitors from other teams, as multiple league competitions are running in the same area. The team is asked to find a way to reduce the popping sound as much as possible.
Live Demonstration — The team is required to demonstrate this mechanism on the setup day for the committee to observe in person. It is also strongly advised to prepare a backup plan in case this mechanism cannot be used during the competition.
Looking forward to seeing your performance in Incheon
Good luck with your preparation!
